Doorway Volunteer Profiles

This part of the Doorway website will introduce you to some of our volunteers.

For advice on what to expect as a Doorway volunteer, who better to talk to than Sue, who has been with us since day one.

"First, you need to make a committment" she says. "We need really reliable people. Second, it helps to be non-judgemental. It's hard work, but we all find it totally worthwhile.

Most volunteers knew nothing about homelessness before they started, but they found themselves building real friendships with the guests. When I first read about the project starting, something told me I had to become involved. I'm very glad I did."

Carina arrived in the UK from Holland in February 2005. Her vocation is the study of drugs misuse and counselling.

Currently engaged on a work experience placement at Doorway as part of her University certificate course in substance misuse, care and counselling, Carina's work is far from merely academic. She also works at the forefront of homelessness, devoting several days a week to support support to homeless people on the streets of Bath and Bristol.

Carina is no stranger to projects such as Doorway, but she has identified something very different about the project.

"Doorway is different because of the way its guests view the support of the staff and volunteers" she says. "At other centres, guests arrive, get their food, then take it to their tables. At Doorway, volunteers and staff sit down with the guests at the tables, and take time to listen to them and support them. It may seem a small difference, but the guests really appreciate it and the effect is to build trust and rapport, openness and friendliness. I think these are the key elements to Doorway."

Carinna has already committed herself long-term as a volunteer at Doorway. "It is a great place to be, I would very much miss out not coming here" she says.
