Community
Support
Doorway
realised early on in the Pilot Project that there was a need
to raise awareness of the issues affecting homeless and marginalised
adults and to dispel some of the public prejudice against
our guests which often led to their becoming socially excluded
and the victims of harassment and sometimes violent crime.
We
hoped to increase understanding of the positive work of the
project and to increase community support to achieve our objective
of helping people move on in their lives.
Doorway
has always benefitted from the strong and active support of
local churches and we have twice been nominated as the mayoral
charity of the year.
We
work at all levels in the local community - including involvement
with community safety and community policing initiatives,
working in schools to deliver the National Curriculum (Yr
10 modules in PSRE) and working with local business networks
to address their concerns and elicit their support for our
aims.
As
a result there is a widespread awareness locally of the work
of Doorway and sympathy with our aims. When we launched Doorway
in 2006 we aimed to raise at least 25% of our funding needs
from our local community within 3 years. We achieved this
aim in 2007/2008, a year ahead of our time.
