How You Can Help

Doorway relies on volunteers, donations and the Friends of Doorway to ensure that we continue to provide a drop-in centre and extra activities for homeless and vulnerably housed adults.

Without this support we have no future...

Like so many other charities we have no guaranteed sustainable funding.

Everything depends on achieving sustainable funding.

You can help by:-

Joining the Friends of Doorway

Donating food, clothing or money

Recycling mobile phones & printer cartridges

Using everyclick.com as your internet search engine

eBay for Doorway - sell on ebay and donate a percentage to Doorway through MissionFish

Doorway regularly recruits volunteers throughout the year.

After the first point of enquiry we will send out a volunteer application which we ask to be returned with the names of two people who can act as referees. Once we have received both references, we hold an initial short informal interview in order for prospective volunteers to have the chance to ask questions before making any commitment to the project.

The energy and skills that our volunteers bring to the project are crucial to our success, helping people move on in their lives and we need the following to join our friendly team:-

Befrienders who will sit and share a meal with guests, providing an opportunity for them to talk or join in activities. They also help guests to make phone calls and contact other specialist agencies for help and support.

Catering Assistants who are prepared to do a variety of tasks such as preparing and serving food, washing up, cleaning kitchen equipment and ensuring the smooth running of the kitchen.

Cooks who help plan, prepare and cook meals (breakfasts on Mondays and 2-course lunches on Thursdays) for an average of 40 to 50 people.

General Helpers who are prepared to do a variety of tasks i.e. making tea/coffee for guests, carrying out laundry duties, sorting clothing and food parcels for guests, and general tidying up after the sessions.

Volunteers receive full training and support and we reimburse all expenses, such as travel to the centre and car parking. Free meals are also provided.

For many of our volunteers, most important is the chance to work with friendly, like-minded people who are making a real difference in the lives of some of our local community’s most disadvantaged people.
