How
You Can Help
Doorway relies
on volunteers, donations and the Friends of Doorway to ensure
that we continue to provide a drop-in centre for homeless adults
at The Salvation Army Hall, Chippenham.
Without this support
we have no future...
Like so many other
charities we have no guaranteed sustainable funding.
Since
the end of the pilot project we have lived ‘from hand to
mouth’ – we have received over 30 rejections from
possible funders and have survived because of an underspend at
the end of the pilot project, one-off grants and the generosity
of individuals and churches .
Everything depends
on achieving sustainable funding. There’s no future without
it and we are a long way from achieving it. At the moment we have
no guaranteed funding from the end of June 2008.

Doorway is holding
an recruitment morning on Tuesday 4th March 2008 9.00am to 1.00pm
for anyone interested in volunteering for the project.
There
will be talks about what we do and the chance to ask questions
before making any commitment to the project.
The energy and
skills that our volunteers bring to the project are crucial to
our success, helping people move on in their lives and we need
the following to join our friendly team:-
Befrienders
who will sit and share a meal with guests, providing an opportunity
for them to talk or join in activities. They also help guests
to make phone calls and contact other specialist agencies for
help and support.
Catering
Assistants who are prepared to do a variety of tasks
such as preparing and serving food, washing up, cleaning kitchen
equipment and ensuring the smooth running of the kitchen.
Cooks
who help plan, prepare and cook meals (breakfasts on Mondays and
2-course lunches on Thursdays) for an average of 40 to 50 people.
General
Helpers who are prepared to do a variety of tasks i.e.
making tea/coffee for guests, carrying out laundry duties, sorting
clothing and food parcels for guests, and general tidying up after
the sessions.
Volunteers receive
full training and support and we reimburse all expenses, such
as travel to the centre and car parking. Free meals are also provided.
For many of our
volunteers, most important is the chance to work with friendly,
like-minded people who are making a real difference in the lives
of some of our local community’s most disadvantaged people.
To book a place
at our recruitment session, and to receive a volunteer information
pack please phone 01249 445385 or email info@doorwayproject.org.uk
