How You Can Help - Volunteering

Doorway is now interviewing potential volunteers throughout the year, on an individual basis, instead of 2 group recruitment days per year.

"My first 'year' - a bit scary at first, but I've always felt safe - the scariness was doing something different out of my comfort zone. I've enjoyed it and learnt a lot from experienced staff and volunteers" Doorway volunteer

The informal interview with the Project Manager will be a chance to talk about the service that we provide, and to ask questions before making any commitment to the project.

The energy and skills that our volunteers bring to the project are crucial to our success, helping people move on in their lives

Volunteering

Doorway needs the following to join our friendly team:

°Befrienders
°Catering Assistants
°Cooks
°General Helpers

Befrienders who will sit and share a meal with guests, providing an opportunity for them to talk or join in activities. They also help guests to make phone calls and contact other specialist agencies for help and support.

Catering Assistants who are prepared to do a variety of tasks such as preparing and serving food, washing up, cleaning kitchen equipment and ensuring the smooth running of the kitchen.

Cooks who help plan, prepare and cook meals (breakfasts on Mondays and 2-course lunches on Thursdays) for about 40 people.

General Helpers who are prepared to do a variety of tasks i.e. making tea/coffee for guests, carrying out laundry duties, sorting clothing and food parcels for guests, and general tidying up after the sessions.

You will full receive training and support and we reimburse all expenses, such as travel to the centre and car parking. Free meals are also provided.

For many of our volunteers, most important is the chance to work with friendly, like-minded people who are making a real difference in the lives of some of our local community's most disadvantaged people
