Volunteer at Doorway
Most of our drop-in staff are trained volunteers who work to a rota. We need at least 10 volunteers per session.
Doorway needs the following to join our friendly team:
Befrienders who will sit and share a meal with guests, providing an opportunity for them to talk or join in activities. They also help guests to make phone calls and contact other specialist agencies for help and support.
Catering Assistants who are prepared to do a variety of tasks such as preparing and serving food, washing up, cleaning kitchen equipment and ensuring the smooth running of the kitchen.
Cooks who help plan, prepare and cook meals (breakfasts on Mondays and 2-course lunches on Thursdays) for about 60 people.
General Helpers who are prepared to do a variety of tasks such as making tea/coffee for guests, carrying out laundry duties, sorting clothing and food parcels for guests, and general tidying up after the sessions.
“I can truly say however I fell when going to Doorway I always feel 100% better when leaving. It really puts things into perspective and gives you a kick up the butt. I enjoy my time at Doorway as it makes me feel valued.” Doorway volunteer
You will full receive training and support and we reimburse all expenses, such as travel to the centre and car parking. Free meals are also provided.
For many of our volunteers, most important is the chance to work with friendly, like-minded people who are making a real difference in the lives of some of our local community’s most disadvantaged people.
For further information about the roles of volunteers please see the do-it.org.uk website.
Volunteer recruitment process
Doorway runs a very strict volunteer recruitment scheme. All drop-in volunteers receive a one-to-one informal interview before visiting a drop-in session. This covers our aims and ethos as well as elements of Health & Safety, Confidentiality and Equal Opportunities. This is followed by practical experience in the drop-in.
Only when we are satisfied that volunteers are suitable, do they sign a formal agreement and join our team.
“I feel increasingly confident during the sessions and this has helped with my overall self-esteem. I’m acquiring small talk.” Doorway volunteer

Volunteering at Christmas
Whilst we are very grateful for the increased awareness of our organisation at this time of year, we would like to point out to those who are enquiring about volunteering at Christmas that we provide services for the other 51 weeks of the year and do not take on temporary volunteers.
We have a dedicated team of around 50 permanent volunteers who are all recruited via a very strict application process.
