About Doorway Homelessness in North Wiltshire News Our Guests If You Are Homeless Friends of Doorway How You Can Help Corporate Support

Doorway is a charity drop-in centre in Chippenham, Wiltshire providing a friendly, safe place for adults who are homeless or who have complex issues, such as debt, mental health problems, substance use or poor life skills which are likely to affect their ability to acquire or sustain a tenancy.

We believe that homeless and marginalised adults are capable of change and will only achieve their full potential when offered a safe, supportive, empowering and non-judgemental environment which will help reverse the downward spiral of homelessness.

Doorway provides guests with the everyday basics i.e. freshly cooked food, laundry and shower facilities, sleeping bags, food parcels, befriending by trained staff and support to access specialist services. In addition, when funding allows, we offer activities such as music and art workshops and IT training which aim to build self esteem and teach new skills as a first step to moving into work and sustaining a tenancy.

Doorway is currently developing the "Moving On" programme which enables trained volunteers to work with guests on a one-on-one basis, helping them to reach achievable goals in their lives. (more information)

Homelessness is often an invisible problem in rural areas like North Wiltshire. Unlike the big cities, rough sleepers are rarely seen.

People finding themselves without a roof in Chippenham are often taken in by friends and allowed to sleep on a sofa or the floor ('sofa-surfing'), rather than remain on the streets.

These are the 'Hidden Homeless' of North Wiltshire
